The dryness west of the Rocky Mountains is primarily due to the rain shadow effect. As moist air from the Pacific Ocean moves eastward and encounters the mountains, it is forced to rise. As the air rises, it cools and releases moisture in the form of rain or snow on the windward side of the mountains. By the time the air descends on the leeward side of the mountains, it has lost much of its moisture, resulting in dry conditions. This phenomenon creates arid and semi-arid climates in regions such as the Great Basin and the deserts of the southwestern United States. **
